Quizzing Overview

AN AID TO UNDERSTANDING BIBLE QUIZZING (prepared by Sid Miller)

 1.                  Each quiz shall consist of 20 questions.

2.                  Each correctly answered “toss up” question is worth 20 points.

3.                  From the time the quizmaster has recognized the quizzer who has buzzed in, the quizzer must finish and answer toe question in 30 seconds (5 seconds to begin and 25 additional seconds to finish) or a minus 10-point error will be charged.

4.                  If no quizzer responds within 5 seconds after the quizmaster has completed a question, the question will be declared closed and the quizmaster will proceed to the next question.

5.                  After being recognized by the quizmaster, the quizzer must begin his answer in the form of a declarative statement within 5 seconds. If the quizzer is recognized before the question is completed, the quizzer must complete and answer the question in 30 seconds. Failure to do either results in a 10-point error.

6.                  If the question or answer is missed, the quizmaster then gives the question (known as a throw over) in its entirety to the corresponding member of the opposing team. (There is a special rule that covers throw over questions in cases where the opposing team has less than four team members.)

7.                  Except for a special rule that gives the quizzer permission to appeal questions in a specified situation, the quizzer is not allowed to appeal the question given by the quizmaster.

            a.                  Only the captain may appeal.

b.                  An appeal must be made immediately at the time of the quizmaster’s decision. (The rule that allows a quizzer to appeal a question gives the quizzer the right to appeal after the bonus points have been awarded to the other team.)

c.                  Once the judges have made a decision (they have 5 minutes to decide), no further appeal will be allowed on the point raised by the captain.

8.                  If a single quizzer answers five questions correctly, he or she has “quizzed out.” If the quizzer has not made any errors, a ten-point bonus will be awarded.

9.                  A team bonus worth 10 points will be awarded when 3 members of a team correctly answer a “toss up” question. An additional 10 point team bonus will be awarded when four, five, or six members correctly answer a “toss up” question. (Throw over questions do not count toward this bonus.)

10.              Three errors will freeze a quizzer in his or her seat. The quizzer cannot be substituted for, cannot buzz in to answer questions, but may answer throw over questions. A “frozen” quizzer may continue to serve as the team captain.
